I have always worked in extremely competitive marketplaces where you watch your competitors and you watch your back. It does keep you sharp.
When I made the move to writing a few years back however I had to totally rethink the entire competitor concept. You see, a fellow author, writing in the same genre as you is usually more of an ally than competitor. There is a sense of camaraderie and well accepted belief that you are stronger together. I might say, "Hey, if you liked my book you will probably like this one too" when referring to another authors book.
As a manufacturer, distributor, or retailer I would never do such a thing... like say, "Hey, if you like my product you would probably like our competitors too....!"
Yeah, that would just not work!
Writing has been and continues to be a nice friendly break for me. I can reserve my competitive spirit for the golf course.
BY THE WAY, I'M DIGGING "MOJO" BY MARSHALL GOLDSMITH. HAVE YOU READ IT?
