In any communication situation, you are both the sender and the receiver, and when you’re communicating fairly, you expect certain things to happen as you play both roles. To help you communicate fairly, I’ve put together a list of my favorite communication rules to help you play—or communicate—fairly. Here they are:
1) Pay attention to what people are saying to you. It’s not enough just to listen when people are talking. You need to pay particular attention to the nonverbal elements in speech, such as body language, hand gestures, vocal tone, and emotional state. Actively read their demeanor and listen to their responses. Try to ascertain if they, in fact, are being straightforward and truthful in their conversation as opposed to just saying what they think you want to hear.
"communication" is a derivative of "community", which itself is a derivative of "commune" - all of which points us back to the interactions, relationships, and interdependacies that form a community. Community is more than just living side by side and communication is more than just sounds moving back and forth between us.
